Aasness, Herbert Wilton
As soon as he was old enough, Herb enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served in a clerical pool (motto: “we don’t retreat, we backspace”). Within four months of being discharged from the service, he was called back into the Air Force to serve during the Korean War. After his final discharge from the military, Herb ended up in Minneapolis where he enrolled in the Minnesota School of Business., He became fascinated with the stenograph machines and enrolled in the court reporting program. He had found his niche; he absolutely loved court reporting. In addition to finding his calling, Herb met his future wife, Joanne Joyce Ellwood, at the Minnesota School of Business. Herb worked in Kansas City and Memphis before joining the reporting firm of Vernon Polk in Los Angeles., When Herb was settled in Los Angeles, he got in touch with Joanne, who had moved to Los Angeles by then. They were married on February 15, 1958, and had two children, Christopher and Jennie. The young family later moved to Ojai., In 1968, Herb established Ventura County Reporting Service with two fellow court reporters, Fran Way and Gladys Goodman. Over the next 26 years the business thrived; Herb became sole owner when his partners retired. In 1995, Herb retired and sold the business to Grace Mabalot, one of his long-time reporters, who is still in business to this day., During his retirement, Herb enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, golfing, bowling, gardening, reading, walking and traveling., Herb was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, James, and his beloved wife, Joanne. He is survived by his son, Christopher, daughter and son-in-law, Jennie and David Whaley, two sisters, Norma Ellison and Maxine Missios, and several nieces and nephews., A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 3, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 3290 Loma Vista Road, Ventura. A reception with storytelling will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American Diabetes Association or to the Kiwanis Foundation of South Bakersfield, P.O. Ashley, Marlene Nagel
Marlene Nagel Ashley 1937 - 2009 Marlene passed away on September 10, 2009. To summarize her life into a paragraph or two doesn’t seem to do her justice. But the planner that she was, she prepared her own obituary. Marlene, a long time Long Beach resident, grew up in Lakewood. She graduated from Wilson High School in 1954 where she competed in swimming and water ballet. She graduated from LBCC and began working as a dental assistant. She married in 1956 and had three children. She ran her own catering busi ness for over 20 years before retiring in 1999. She also traveled the world with her friends. Her hobbies included cooking, painting, reading, and helping with her six grandchildren. What she humbly left out was how absolutely wonderful she was to her family and friends. How loved she was. How silly she was. How patient and kind she was. How interested she was in others. How much she cared. How strong she was. How beautiful she was - inside and out. And how important she was to us. She laughed at herself. She told great stories. She made up silly games. She loved a good recipe. She liked the color purple and she loved the smell of gardenias. And she enjoyed a nice cup of tea. She was an amazing mother and hands down, the best grandmother in the world. She will be missed more than words can say. We love you Mema!A private family service is scheduled. She requested that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation(jdrf.org).

Benda, Dennis James
BENDA-Dennis James Benda, was born October 24, 1944 and died June 7, 2008. After his father passed away at an early age, he was raised by his beloved and remarkable mother, Eleanor. A botany class in high school sparked an interest in horticulturefor Dennis. This interest became a passion leading to a career growing and distributing plants, and caring for trees. In his 20’s he became the arborist at the Huntington Botanical Gardens, and at times gave demonstrations on pruning and tree care. He enjoyed pruning the fabulous collection of trees at the Huntington which included his favorite tree, the Arbutus that stands opposite the bottom of the Japanese Garden. In 1978 Dennis became a Greensman in the Movie Industry, creating environments with plants on a wide variety of shows. For five years he created the greens for Fantasy Island, always with an eye to enhancing the background that framed each unique scene. He became very close to Ricardo Montal ban, the crew, and the many guest stars who visited the island. In the Muppet Movie he went underwater to set up and manipulate the lily pads. Often while working, he had off-camera conversations with Kermit. In the Great Outdoors he spread redwood bark for his friend Bart the Bear to walk on and wired leaves on the trees so the setting looked like summer, not fall. He enjoyed building the forest for the TV special Alice in Wonderland. In North Carolina he was bitten by a Brown Recluse Spider while filming The Last of the Mohicans! Wherever he worked, he always enjoyed keeping the morale of the crew high with plenty of laughter and joking. Upon retiring, Dennis received a certificate worded: “We thank you for your outstanding contributions of talent and professionalism to the Industry since 1978. Hopefully, we can all live up to the standards of excellence which you have set and maintained throughout your career as a-Greensman.” Dennis is survived by his brother, Richard, his first wife, Ruth Johnson, and h is second wife, Lisa Quinn, the mother of his sons Spencer and Shaun.
