Ashley, Marlene Nagel
Marlene Nagel Ashley 1937 - 2009 Marlene passed away on September 10, 2009. To summarize her life into a paragraph or two doesn’t seem to do her justice. But the planner that she was, she prepared her own obituary. Marlene, a long time Long Beach resident, grew up in Lakewood. She graduated from Wilson High School in 1954 where she competed in swimming and water ballet. She graduated from LBCC and began working as a dental assistant. She married in 1956 and had three children. She ran her own catering busi ness for over 20 years before retiring in 1999. She also traveled the world with her friends. Her hobbies included cooking, painting, reading, and helping with her six grandchildren. What she humbly left out was how absolutely wonderful she was to her family and friends. How loved she was. How silly she was. How patient and kind she was. How interested she was in others. How much she cared. How strong she was. How beautiful she was - inside and out. And how important she was to us. She laughed at herself. She told great stories. She made up silly games. She loved a good recipe. She liked the color purple and she loved the smell of gardenias. And she enjoyed a nice cup of tea. She was an amazing mother and hands down, the best grandmother in the world. She will be missed more than words can say. We love you Mema!A private family service is scheduled. She requested that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation(jdrf.org).
