75 of Ontario passed away October 28, 2009 at home. He was born February 13, 1934 in Cucamonga, Ca and was an area resident all his life. “Shorty” was a former owner of a family concrete construction Co. and an U.S. Army veteran, Korean Conflict. ARDALA DEE HERNANDEZ*
HERNANDEZ, ARDALA DEE Ardala D. Hernandez, 76, passed away on October 18, 2009, of Alzheimer’s disease. Born in Amelia, Ohio, on November 10, 1933, she moved to San Lorenzo, California, in the 1940’s. She married her beloved husband Julio on December 24, 1949, in Berkley, California. She had five children, Greg, Paul, David, Donna and Julie. She was a longtime resident of Poway since 1964. Ardala, a woman and believer of high moral values and beliefs, maintained high standards in her everyday life. Due to these personal characteristics, she immediately fit in with the Chaplin’s office at MCAS. She retired from Civil Service after serving there for 28 years, receiving the Department of the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Medal. Ardala is survived by her husband Julio, five children, nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She will be so severely missed by her loved ones that no words or measurements can be utilized to describe the love of mom, Ardie, grandma. A memorial Service will be held at MCAS Chapel on Saturday, October 31st, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation may be sent to Elizabeth Hospice, 150 W. Crest St., Escondido, CA 92025.

AUGUST COPPOLA
Coppola, August, a former literature professor who was the father of actor Nicolas Cage and brother of filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola and actress Talia Shire, has died. He was 75. Coppola died Tuesday in Newport Beach, CA after suffering a heart attack. Often described as flamboyant and eccentric, Coppola taught comparative literature at Cal State Long Beach in the 1960s and ’70s and served as a trustee of the California State University system before moving to San Francisco State in 1984. He became dean of the School of Creative Arts there and was also professor of cinema until 1992. Coppola was born Feb. 16, 1934, in Hartford, Conn., the oldest child of Carmine Coppola, a composer and classically trained flutist, and his wife, Italia, a lyricist. The family moved often, depending on where Carmine’s work took them, but the children were close and enjoyed going to movies together and reading books. August Coppola earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from UCLA, a master’s in English from Hofstra University and a doctorate in comparative literature and interdisciplinary studies from Occidental College, then began teaching at Cal State Long Beach. He and his wife, dancer Joy Vogelsang, had three sons, Christopher, Marc and Nicolas, before divorcing. Christopher became a film director and Marc a disc jockey. He is survived by his brother, Francis Ford Coppola; his sister, Talia Shire; three sons, Christopher Coppola, Marc Coppola and Nicolas Cage; and six grandchildren. Abraham Seltzer, 89, of Palm Springs, Calif. passed away October 19, 2009 in Palm Springs. He was born January 25, 1920 to Charles and Sarah Seltzer in Brooklyn, N.Y. He married Rochelle Bienenfeld on April 21, 1966 in Westwood, Calif. He was a credit manager for Premiere Aluminum for 20 years. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941-1945 as a Sergeant and was a member of the Jewish War Veterans. Mr. Seltzer is survived by his daughters, Judy Baird and Adrienne Christensen of Truckee, Calif., and Susan Enowitz of Coronado, Calif.; and sons, Michael Seltzer of Alta Loma, Calif. and Jeff Bernstein of La Quinta, Calif.

Alcove; son Prudencio Nieva Jr. (Mark Bizarro), Step children Lori Escalante, and Scott Alcove. Siblings Jeanette Flores (Felix Sr.), John Jaramillo(Lydia), Jack Jaramillo (Linda), Joan Graham(Gary), Jearld Jaramillo, the late James Jaramillo Sr., (Janet). Grandsons: Andrew,, Aaron, and Arthur Alcove., God Daughters: Kristina Rose Jaramillo-Raines, Jaylene C. Hess and Keelie McCain, numerous nieces and nephews, and grand nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind many friends and an extended Caltrans family., Juliette will be remembered for her contagious laugh, sense of humor, generous heart, and her unconditional love she shared with her family and friends throughout the years. She was the guiding light for many of us and her devotion will be forever in our hearts and will truly be missed. As a teenager, Bill Poole sometimes cut morning classes at Oceanside High School to go fishing. His love of fishing saw him rise from deckhand to owner of boats, businesses and marinas., As a pioneer in long-range fishing and a founder of the local chapter of Safari Club International, Mr. Poole was a legendary skipper and big-game hunter., In 2003, he was honored by the International Game and Fish Association for establishing and nurturing long-range sport fishing in San Diego., Mr. Poole died of complications from cancer Oct. 21 at his San Diego home. He was 87., “He was a very smart, intelligent, successful man,” said friend and former business partner Frank LoPreste. “He also had the wherewithal to enjoy life.”, Mr. Poole grew up during the Depression and knew his share of hardships, including going broke during his first plunge into a sport-fishing enterprise with his father in 1946 and suffering serious burns from a fire aboard his first fishing schooner., By the late 1960s, Mr. Poole was part owner of Fisherman’s Landing, Seaforth Sportfishing and Marina, Sun Harbor Marina and Marina Cortez. He loved taking passengers on recreational fishing trips., He owned, operated and built dozens of custom sport-fishing boats. When he couldn’t get a boat to do what he wanted, he opened his own boat-building yard, the Poole Boat Co., longtime friend Bob Fletcher said., “Bill was absolutely critical in creating the (sport-fishing) industry as we know it today,” said Fletcher, former president of the Sportfishing Association of California., When most sport fishing consisted of one- or two-day trips, Mr. Poole was making longer trips, venturing into waters not usually frequented by recreational fishing expeditions. He worked with the Coast Guard and Mexican government officials to establish the necessary permits and regulations for long-range sport fishing, Fletcher said., Friends said Mr. Poole was an accomplished entrepreneur whose life was filled with adventure and success. “He had a tremendous amount of energy and a lust for life,” said Theodore Gildred, former U.S. ambassador to Argentina. “He was very generous and very open. His word was his bond.”, Mr. Poole enjoyed hunting throughout the world, including Africa and Argentina. He and his wife, Ingrid, founded the San Diego chapter of Safari Club International in the 1970s., “He was always interested in conservation and wildlife,” Ingrid Poole said. The couple established the Bill and Ingrid Poole Foundation to provide fishing and hunting opportunities for deserving youths., Mr. Poole was also a mentor and supporter of many in the sport-fishing industry, LoPreste said., William E. Poole was born April 10, 1922, in Oceanside to Herb and Faye Poole. After graduating from high school in 1940, he earned money by driving trucks. He enlisted in the Navy during World War II and was an aviation mechanic and gunnery instructor. He served until 1946., Mr. Poole, who also spent time in Montana, was a member of many fishing, hunting and conservation groups, including the California Wildlife Federation, the Montana Wildlife Federation, the World Wildlife Museum, the Foundation for North American Wild Sheep and Ducks Unlimited. He was also active with the San Diego Rod & Reel Club and the Masonic Lodge., In addition to his wife, Mr. Poole is survived by his daughters, Sandra Schafer of Rancho Santa Fe, Sharon Thomas of Lake Stevens, Wash., and Billie Zambroski of Arizona; sons, Randall of Lakeside, Erik of San Diego and Stine of San Diego; and nine grandchildren., In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Bill and Ingrid Poole Foundation, 1028 Savoy St., San Diego, CA 92107, or the Sportfishing Association of California. BRUCE E. BRITZMAN Of Tarzana and was born in Beloit, Wiscons in on February 5, 1932 and passed away on October 20, 2009 at the age of 77. He was preceded in death by his parents Dorothy and Fred and his two brothers Ronnie and Ferd. He was a proud and decorated veteran who served in the US Air Force during the Korean War. He was also highly accomplished as a designer of some of the most innovative water fountains of the time in many locations including Sea World and Caesars Palace. He later worked in sales, and for the last 10+ years enjoyed a position as a driv er for Enterprise. He is survived by his wife, Karol; his children, Gwyn, Barry and Athene; his two grandchildren, Enea and Aurora; and siblings, Gib, Chuck and Angela. He loved his family, his friends, and music. He was a teller of jokes and spread laughter wherever he went. He will be greatly missed. A formal Veteran’s Memorial Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, November 4th 2009 at 1:45 at the Riverside National Cemetery (Staging Area 4).
