Dr. Nolan W. Cramer Dr. Nolan W. Cramer, 76, a longtime Long Beach Peninsula and former Surfside resident and longstanding anesthesiologist, passed away on Sunday, February 21, 2010. Dr. Cramer was born in Chewelah, WA, August 20, 1933, the oldest child of Fred and Marie Cramer. He graduated from Spangle Academy in Spangle, WA in 1952 and received his Bachelor of Science degree at Walla Walla University in College Place, WA in 1956. He atten ded Loma Linda University, where he received his doctor of medicine degree in 1960. He completed a rotating internship at Deaconess Hospital in Spokane, WA from 1960-1961, served a fellowship program at the Pediatric Anesthesia Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles in 1962 and completed his residency at Loma Linda Hospital from 1961-1963. He was board certified as an anesthesiologist and became a partner with the Watson-King Anesthesia Group, Long Beach in 1964. Dr. Cramer served as Captain in the US Army Medi cal Corps with the 91st Evacuation Hospital in Cam Ranh Bay, Viet Nam from 1964 - 1966 and Letterman Hospital, San Francisco 1967-1968. After serving in the Army, he returned to his anesthesia practice with Watson-King at Long Beach Community Hospital, Woodruff Gables, Bellflower; Bellwood Hospital, Bellflower. As a member of a locum tenens team, he joined the staff at Royal Hobart Hospital, Hobart, Tasmania 1996 -1997. Upon his return from Tasmania, he was Director of Anesthesia at Tri City Regional Hospit al, Hawaiian Gardens. Following a stroke in 2003, he retired. Dr. Cramer has held medical licenses both in Washington from 1962-2008 and California from 1961 - 2010. His professional memberships included the Institute For Medical Quality/Surveyor; the American Society of Anesthesiologists; the California Society of Anesthesiologists; the American Medical Association; and the Los Angeles Medical Association. Dr. Cramer was a very well respected and highly regarded physician who touched many lives during his medical career. Until his retirement he was an active member of the following organizations: City of Long Beach Medical Corps Police Reserve; LB Community Hospital Fillmore Condit Club; LB Downtown Lions Club; Physicians Wine and Food Society; Aircraft Owner & Pilot Association; Experimental Aircraft Association; Silver Wings Fraternity; Flying Physicians; Baja Bush Pilots; and LIGA. This altruistic and devoted physician is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Anne. They were married on a ski slope at T imberline Lodge, Mt. Hood on New Year’s Day, 1981. He is also survived by his daughters, Sylvia (Giovanni) and Linda (Rick); stepdaughters, Pamela and Deborah (Jeff); stepson Ronald (Graciela). Special thanks to Pamela, his caregiver for the past 2 1/2 years. He has 9 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren; brother, Bill (Lillian) and sister, Ruth (Stan), and several nephews and nieces. Dr. Cramer will be forever remembered for his sense of adventure and his love for travel. As an avid skier, he and Anne skie d at least 40-50 days a year - starting with the first snowflake. Ski trips weren’t limited to the United States but several weeks each year in Europe. As an airplane owner and pilot, he enjoyed flying at moment’s notice, which helped to satisfy his constant hunger for exploration. Other hobbies included waterskiing, skin diving, hunting, and fishing. A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, March 12, 2010 at the Riverside National Cemetery at 2:00pm, 22495 Van Buren Blvd., Riverside.
