BILL ROGERS If news about county government wasn’t in Bill Roger’s notebook, it probably never happened. For about 20 years, as the Sun’s county government reporter, Rogers chronicled the activities and inactivities of county employees. A soft- spoken man, Rogers died May 1 at his home in Mammoth Lakes. Cause of death was a massive heart attack although he had suffered from a serious kidney disorder for several years. Survivors include his wife, Peggy; and several cousins. Roger’s passions were camping, fishing and hiking in the east Sierra. For many years he organized camping trips for a dozen or so friends. On camping trips, he kept a shirt-pocket notebook listing everything from toilet paper to T-bone steaks. Rogers came by his interest in the east Sierra at an early age when his parents, Theodore and Tessie Rogers, took him on camping trips to the area: when Roger’s retired in 1993, he moved to Mammoth Lakes. Before coming to The Sun, Rogers worked five years as a legislative aide in Washington D.C., and for the Riverside Press Enterprise. He was born in Glendale, attended schools there and graduated from USC. A lakeside memorial service is tentatively planned for early summer after the ice melts. His ashes will be scattered on one of the lakes he loved.
