DEAN CLAYTON
86, of Claremont, passed away July 23, 2010 at his Claremont home. He was born August 13, 1923 in Provo, Utah to James Perry Clayton and Elvira Snyder Clayton. His brother Keith, was four years older, and his mother died six months after Dean’s birth. Dean was then raised by grandparents and other family members. He married Madelyn Stringfellow August 3, 1945 in the Logan Utah LDS Temple. Dean enlisted in the Navy Air Corps during World War II, where he attended gunnery and machine schools, and learned to fly aircraft. He received Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Brigham Young University and became an elementary school teacher in Provo, and a teacher and principal in the Pomona Unified School District. After 40 years in education, Dean retired in 1988. Students, teachers, and parents loved and appreciated him. Dean and Madelyn raised three children in Claremont, where they lived for 46 years. Dean was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving in many varied callings. Dean is preceded in death by his wife, who passed only 8 weeks ago, and is survived by children James Gary Clayton, Susan Kay Clayton Zylstra, Michael Dean Clayton, their spouses, and nine grandchildren. Dean was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, teacher, and friend and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. His kindness, integrity, strength, generosity, and pure goodness have been an example to all. Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 2nd at 10am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on 728 E. Baseline in Claremont. Interment will follow at Oak Park Cemetery, Claremont.
