William Parker Savery Nov. 3, 1944 - June 21, 2010 Bill was born in Plymouth, MA on November 3, 1944, to Dorothy Libby Savery and Francis Wadsworth Savery. He graduated from Plymouth High School in 1962 and subsequently attended both Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Buzzards Bay and New York University. As an able bodied seaman in the merchant marine he became active in union politics, first in New York City as a member of the Militant-Solidarity Caucus working toward reform of the National Maritime Union. He came to the bay area in the early 80s, working on ferry boats In San Francisco Bay for almost 30 years. He was a colorful raconteur, joketeller, political activist, witty intellectual, movie expert, devotee of cats and the Red Sox, genealogically half Irish and half Mayflower descendant but a character with a character pure Irish, always exceedingly true to himself, great charmer, lover of justice and rock and roll. Always good for a laugh or a rant. He died suddenly and unexpectedly of ischemic cardiovascular disease at his home in Oakland on June 21, 2010. A bright star was extinguished but will live in our hearts forever. Bill is survived by sister Ann Friend of Oakland, CA, brother Winsor Savery of Houston, TX and niece Sherry Martin of Katy, TX. REMEMBERING BILL, a celebration of his life and fond farewell, will be held at the Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland, CA on Saturday, 9/11 at 11 am.
